Janssen claims Arokodare’s loan status may be limiting Ajax starts

Former Netherlands footballer Theo Janssen believes financial considerations may be behind Tolu Arokodare not always being selected in the Ajax starting XI.

Speaking on Ziggo Sport’s Rondo programme, Janssen questioned whether Arokodare’s loan arrangement places him at a disadvantage to Marcos Leonardo, who joined Ajax on a permanent transfer.

Janssen argued that the club’s investment in Leonardo could be influencing the coach’s selection decisions, despite his view that Arokodare should be given more opportunities from the start.

“It has to do with money that he doesn’t always play,” Janssen said, as quoted by Headtopics.

He then highlighted the different circumstances surrounding Ajax’s two forwards.

“Tolu is on loan and Leonardo was bought. Do you think the trainer decides this?” Janssen added.

The former footballer also spoke positively about Arokodare’s character and his contribution on the pitch. He praised the Nigerian striker’s physical strength and finishing ability, while describing him as a player capable of making a significant impact in Ajax’s attack.

“He’s a nice guy when you hear him talk. He’s strong and can score a goal. He’s just a good player,” Janssen said.

Arokodare has scored nine goals in 14 appearances for Ajax across all competitions this season. He has also recorded three assists.

Janssen’s comments centre on the contrast between Arokodare’s loan status and the permanent signing of Marcos Leonardo, suggesting that the financial circumstances of the two deals may be considered when the Ajax coach chooses between them.
