Manchester United keep faith with Michael Carrick for Chelsea test

Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea, despite growing doubts over his position after the club’s poor start to the season.

BBC sources say the 45-year-old has been given the opportunity to improve the team’s fortunes when United travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, 31 October 2026.

Carrick oversaw training on Tuesday as Manchester United prepared for the match, with the club attempting to end a run of eight games without a victory in all competitions.

Manchester United’s hierarchy had discussed the possibility of dismissing Carrick and appointing a replacement. Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle United manager, and Julian Nagelsmann, the former Germany head coach, were among the candidates considered.

However, BBC sources have confirmed that Carrick, the former Middlesbrough manager, will lead Manchester United against Chelsea and will be given further time to improve the team’s results and performances.
