By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
2021/2022 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership champions, Bayelsa Queens have announced the departure of captain, Uzoamaka Igwe who has joined Egyptian champion, Wadi Degla.
The club on their social media pages confirmed the latest development while thanking the player for her enviable contribution to the team.
Igwe led the Prosperity Girls to numerous titles as captain of the club.
“Our captain and defender, Igwe Uzoamaka, has signed with Wadi Degla of Egypt,” Bayelsa Queens posted on their Facebook page.
“Igwe Uzoamaka has been a loyal and outstanding player for our club. She has led us to many victories and trophies, including the WAFU ZONE B title in 2022 and the TINGO Cup in 2023.
“She has also represented Bayelsa Queens at the international level, winning medals at the CAF Women’s Champions League. She is a true leader, a fierce competitor, and a role model for many young girls who aspire to play football.
“We are very proud of Igwe Uzoamaka and we wish her all the best in her new adventure with Wadi Degla. We are confident that she will continue to shine and make us proud in Egypt and beyond.
“We thank her for her dedication, passion, and contribution to our club and our community. She will always be a part of the Bayelsa Queens family.”
After winning the 2021/2022 league title with the Yenegoa-based side, she captained the club to another title at the West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League in Ivory Coast which qualified the team for the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League.
At the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League, the team also won a bronze medal, the best performance by any Nigerian side at the tournament.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t lead the team to retain the league title after a 2-1 loss to Delta Queens in the final of the 2023 NWFL Premiership Super Six in Asaba, Delta State capital.
After the disappointment, she guided the team to the 2023 Federation Cup (FA Cup) title before her switch to the Egyptian champions.
