Paris 2024: Uganda inch closer to Nigeria date after first leg win over Cameroon

Uganda’s senior women’s national team secured a 2-0 win over Cameroon in the second round, first leg of the Paris 2024 Olympics Qualifiers on Thursday.
After squezzing past East African rivals Rwanda, Catherine Nagadya scored the opener for the hosts in the 11th minute FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.
The Indomitable Lionesses had the chance of leveling the scoreline but former African women’s player of the year, Ajara Nchout Njoya missed a penalty kick as Ugandan goalkeeper, Vanessa Kadungi saved the spot kick.
Fazila Ikwaput put the game beyond the reach of Cameroon with the second goal in the 75th minute.
The return leg will be held in Cameroon with the winner on aggregate facing either Nigeria or Ethiopia in the third round of the Qualifiers.
On the other hand, the Super Falcons played out a 1-1 draw with Ethiopia in the first leg leg of their Second Round tie at the Abebe Bilika Stadium in Addis Ababa on Wednesday.
The nine-time African champions seek a return to the women’s football event of the Olympics after a 15-year absence. Nigeria’s last appearance was at the Beijing Olympics in China (2008).
