Adegbuyi earns player of the match award as Nigeria beat Puerto Rico

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was named player of the match after helping Nigeria’s Flamingos secure a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The win gave Nigeria their first three points of the tournament and revived their campaign after a narrow 2-1 defeat by Poland in their opening Group B fixture.

Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a composed finish, rewarding Nigeria for their strong first-half performance. Precious Oscar then confirmed the result with a second goal deep into stoppage time.

Adegbuyi’s display continued the form she showed in the WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup, where Nigeria produced a dominant campaign to win the competition earlier this year.

The result provides a response to the defeat by Poland and restores confidence in the Flamingos squad ahead of their final group-stage match.

Nigeria’s next assignment will be their most demanding test of the group phase, against a formidable North Korean side.

Although qualification remains possible, the Flamingos’ final position will be determined by the results in the last round of Group B matches and the tournament’s progression criteria.
