Akor Adams targets another Nigeria win in Guinea-Bissau qualifier

Akor Adams says Nigeria must build on their opening victory when they face Guinea-Bissau in their crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles travel to the Estadio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau for a 5pm Nigerian time kick-off, aiming to make it two wins from two in Group L.

Nigeria began their campaign with a 2-1 comeback against Madagascar, while Guinea-Bissau also opened with three points by beating co-hosts Tanzania 2-0.

With only one qualifying place available from the group, both sides will know the importance of maintaining their early momentum. Eric Chelle’s Nigeria will also be keen to avoid another slow start after falling behind in their first match.

Adams confident despite difficult opening

Adams had a challenging personal outing against Madagascar but remains confident in the strength of the Super Eagles squad. The Venezia striker believes Nigeria are capable of securing another positive result and says the team’s objective is to take maximum points from their trip to Bissau.

Nigeria were forced to recover after conceding first in their opening qualifier. George Ilenikhena restored parity in first-half stoppage time before fellow debutant Moses Usor completed the turnaround with an impressive individual effort.

Usor’s strike also surpassed Adams’ record for the fastest goal scored by a substitute on his competitive debut for the Super Eagles.

Despite the setback at the beginning of the match, Adams said he had never doubted Nigeria’s ability to recover. He believes the comeback demonstrated the mentality required to compete for results in difficult circumstances.

A victory over Guinea-Bissau would take the Super Eagles to six points and give them a strong position in the group before their doubleheader against Tanzania in November.

The match in Bissau represents a tougher challenge than Nigeria’s opening fixture, with Guinea-Bissau having already shown their own ability to start the qualification campaign positively. Nigeria will therefore be seeking a more assured performance as they continue their pursuit of a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
