Al Ahly re-sign Akram Tawfik on a free transfer after one season away
Al Ahly have brought midfielder Akram Tawfik back to the club on a three-year contract, completing a free transfer just one year after his departure.
The Egyptian side announced the deal on Wednesday evening, confirming that Tawfik will return to the squad during the current summer transfer window. His comeback reflects Al Ahly’s decision to rely on the experience of players considered capable of making a difference in major matches.
Tawfik ended his contract with Qatari club Al Shamal by mutual consent before agreeing to return to the Cairo-based club. He joined Al Shamal in the summer of 2025 and spent one season there, but has now chosen to make his return to what has been described as his footballing home.
Al Ahly said on their official website that Essam Serag El-Din, the club’s head of contracts, completed all the financial and administrative procedures connected with the transfer. The process was carried out in full co-ordination with Wail Gomaa, Al Ahly’s director of football.
The move makes Tawfik the fifth signing made by Al Ahly during the current transfer window. He follows Ali Mahmoud, Aktay Abdullah, Sofiane Ben Jedida and Monsef Bekrar in joining the club ahead of the new campaign.
Tawfik’s return gives Al Ahly another experienced option in midfield as the club prepares for the 2026-27 season. His previous spell at the club had established him as one of the side’s committed players, and his re-signing places him back within the squad after only a single season overseas.
Al Ahly are currently preparing for the new season at a training camp in Spain. Their programme includes a high-profile fixture against Barcelona in the Joan Gamper Trophy on 19 August.
The match will form part of the club’s preparations before the start of the 2026-27 campaign, while Tawfik’s return provides Al Ahly with another addition as they continue to assemble their squad during the summer market.
The midfielder’s transfer was completed without a fee after his agreement with Al Shamal was terminated by mutual consent. He will now begin a new three-year spell with Al Ahly, having returned to the club after his brief period in Qatar.
