Barcelona rotation battle intensifies as Lamine Yamal injury doubt grows before Valencia game

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick faces difficult selection decisions ahead of the meeting with Valencia in the 2026-27 season, with Lamine Yamal a doubt after missing training on the pitch because of a knock.

Yamal worked in the gym on the eve of the match after suffering the unspecified blow. His absence from the starting XI would be a major change, given that he and Raphinha have started every game so far. However, Flick has a squad with enough quality and flexibility to cope, particularly with Barcelona’s Champions League opener against Feyenoord approaching.

The competition for places has become especially intense as several players have made strong claims to start. According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Joan Garcia is the only player whose place in the expected line-up appears secure.

Flick used two different defensive units during the latest training session, meaning there is little certainty beyond what the German coach has in mind. Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin and Espart are expected to form a possible combination in defence.

Eric Garcia began the season as the starting right-back but was replaced by Jules Kounde in the third match. In central defence, Andreas Christensen has started twice, against Elche and Rayo, despite not initially being among the leading candidates for a starting role. He could now lose his place.

Espart has established himself as the leading option at left-back, even though he is naturally a right-back. That position had appeared to belong to Joao Cancelo, but the competition has since shifted.

The midfield contest is even more demanding. Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Fermin Lopez, Marc Bernal, Rodri and Brian Farinas all offer different qualities, but each has a case for being selected against Valencia.

Flick had been considering handing Rodri a start, although he may again opt for Bernal alongside Pedri while keeping the Champions League fixture against Feyenoord in mind. Gavi brings intensity and character to the midfield, Olmo offers quality between the lines, and Fermin Lopez is particularly effective when arriving in the penalty area.

Olmo and Fermin have shared responsibility for the attacking midfield role, with Fermin now expected to be given the next opportunity.

There are also decisions to be made in attack. Yamal’s fitness remains uncertain because Flick has not specified where the painful knock occurred. Raphinha has played as the central forward in each of Barcelona’s matches so far.

Gabriel Jesus offers experience but has only recently arrived. Karim Adeyemi and Gordon have shared starts, and if Yamal is left out of the starting line-up as expected, both players could operate on the wings.
