Bayern Munich vs Leipzig: Michael Olise poses major test for David Raum

Bayern Munich put their unbeaten Bundesliga record on the line against Leipzig at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, with Michael Olise’s form on the right flank likely to be central to the contest.

Vincent Kompany’s side have taken three wins and two draws from their opening five league matches. They have scored heavily in victories over Union Berlin and Elversberg, while their only dropped points came against Augsburg and Schalke 04. Bayern have conceded just four goals.

Olise has contributed four goals and an assist in five appearances, making him the Bundesliga’s leading scorer at this early stage. Born in England to a British-Nigerian father, he was approached by the Nigeria Football Federation, England and Algeria before choosing to represent France at senior level.

Leipzig have collected three wins but lost twice, with both defeats coming away from home against Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen. Their victories included a six-goal win over Eintracht Frankfurt and a comfortable success against Hamburger SV.

Christopher Nkunku has scored four goals and supplied an assist in five league matches since returning to Leipzig. However, the visitors conceded five times in their two away defeats, a record that will concern Martin Demichelis four months into his tenure as he attempts to win over sceptical home-based media.

Kick-off is at 5:30pm WAT (6:30pm CEST local) on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

Recent meetings favour Bayern

Bayern have won the sides’ past three meetings, including a 2-0 DFB-Pokal quarter-final victory at the Allianz Arena on February 11, 2026. They also beat Leipzig 5-1 away on January 17, 2026, and 6-0 in Munich on August 22, 2025.

Leipzig’s only point in the last five encounters came from a 3-3 draw on May 3, 2025. Bayern also won 5-1 on December 20, 2024.

Across all competitions, Bayern have won fifteen of the clubs’ twenty-six meetings, compared with three Leipzig victories and eight draws. The aggregate score is 63-33 to Bayern.

Key battles

Olise will face Leipzig left-back David Raum. Raum has been a regular in a defence that has looked reliable in wins but vulnerable in defeats. If he moves inside to cover, the space behind him could give Olise room to attack.

Nkunku is expected to seek pockets between the lines against Bayern’s likely double pivot of Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic. Bayern’s midfield pairing will aim to control the tempo and limit the French forward’s influence. If they can restrict him early, Leipzig could lose their main creative outlet.

Jamal Musiala remains sidelined while recovering from a thigh injury and is expected to be out for a few more weeks. Hiroki Ito and Sacha Boey have yet to play league minutes this season.

Predicted Bayern XI (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Stanisic, Upamecano, Tah, Davies; Kimmich, Pavlovic; Olise, Saibari, Diaz; Kane.

Leipzig could be without Christoph Baumgartner, who has missed matches since early October with a thigh injury. Assan Ouedraogo is out until late December with a shoulder injury, while Marc Guiu has a muscle problem and is expected to miss a few weeks.

Predicted Leipzig XI (4-2-3-1): Vandevoordt; Baku, Orban, Lukeba, Raum; Banzuzi, El Aynaoui; Maksimovic, Nkunku, Nusa; Romulo.
