Genclerbirligi v Galatasaray: Victor Osimhen targets another goalscoring display in Ankara

Galatasaray travel to Eryaman Stadyumu on Saturday, 17 October 2026, knowing victory over Genclerbirligi would preserve their comfortable lead at the top of the Super Lig. The hosts, meanwhile, are seeking a result to halt a poor run under new manager Reiner Storck.

Kick-off is at 14:00 (2:00 PM Nigerian time) and 16:00 in Turkey. Much of the attention will centre on Victor Osimhen, who has scored six goals and provided three assists in five league appearances this season. Genclerbirligi have conceded more than twice per game over their past five matches.

Okan Buruk’s Galatasaray have won four of their last five league games, with a 3-1 victory over Kasımpasa on 9 October extending that run. Their only defeat in that sequence came at Trabzonspor. Their European form has been less convincing, however, with successive defeats by Sporting CP and Barcelona.

Genclerbirligi had gone five matches in all competitions without a win before Storck’s appointment. That run included heavy away losses at Trabzonspor and Basaksehir, while their home meetings with Amedspor and Erzurumspor ended in draws.

Storck replaced Metin Diyadin on 8 October and took charge of his first match against Amedspor, which also finished level. The 63-year-old German is Genclerbirligi’s first overseas manager in more than a decade.

The difference between the teams is reflected in the table. Galatasaray have a goal difference of plus five, while Genclerbirligi are on minus eight. The hosts’ seven league goals have been shared among seven players, with none scoring more than once.

Head-to-head and key battle

The sides exchanged victories last season. Galatasaray won 2-1 in Ankara on 18 April 2026, before Genclerbirligi eliminated them from the Turkiye league cup later that week. Galatasaray have won 14 of the past 23 meetings, compared with four Genclerbirligi victories and five draws.

Victor Osimhen’s movement behind defenders will pose the main threat. Dimitrios Goutas is expected to lead the home defence alongside Metehan Baltacı, with Genclerbirligi having conceded 15 goals in seven league games. Osimhen’s nine goals and assists in five appearances underline how little space he needs to punish opponents.

Team news

Kevin Rodrigues is unavailable with a muscle problem, while Cheikh Niasse is being monitored with a similar complaint. Peter Etebo, who has 45 senior Nigeria caps, remains short of fitness after an Achilles rupture and has made only one substitute appearance this season. Victor Orakpo is pushing for a place in attack.

Genclerbirligi predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Irfan Egribayat; Pedro Pereira, Dimitrios Goutas, Metehan Baltacı, Abdurrahim Dursun; Ousmane Diabate, Salih Ucan; Franco Tongya, Ogulcan Ulgun, Adama Traore; Sekou Koita.

Lucas Torreira is suspended after his red card against Kasımpasa, so Mario Lemina and Gabriel Sara are expected to form the midfield pivot. Wilfried Singo is a doubt with a thigh injury, meaning Davinson Sanchez could cover at right-back. Osimhen is fit to play.

Galatasaray predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Ugurcan Cakır; Davinson Sanchez, Abdulkerim Bardakci, Kaan Ayhan, Eren Elmalı; Mario Lemina, Gabriel Sara; Barıs Alper Yılmaz, Ilkay Gundogan, Leroy Sane; Victor Osimhen.
