Chelsea track Italy defender Honest Ahanor as Nigeria eligibility remains open

Chelsea are monitoring Atalanta and Italy central defender Honest Ahanor, who remains eligible to represent Nigeria despite making two senior appearances for Italy.

The 18-year-old is being assessed as part of Chelsea’s wider search for promising young players who could become valuable long-term investments. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea and BlueCo are following Ahanor closely as a potential future addition.

Ahanor is one of several emerging talents being monitored by the group, although Atalanta currently see him as an important member of their squad. The Italian club have already rejected two offers for the defender during the summer transfer window.

Born in Aversa, Italy, to Nigerian parents, Ahanor came through the academy system at Genoa before moving to Atalanta. He has since established himself as one of the most highly regarded young defenders to emerge from Italian football.

Although Ahanor has represented Italy’s senior side twice, both appearances came in friendly matches. He featured against Luxembourg and Greece, meaning he remains eligible to change his international allegiance and play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Ahanor was initially eligible only to represent Nigeria because, despite being born in Italy, he did not have Italian citizenship. That situation changed after he turned 18 in February 2026 and obtained Italian citizenship, allowing him to represent Italy as well as retaining his eligibility for Nigeria.

His ability to operate in more than one defensive position has contributed to his growing reputation and has made him an attractive prospect for clubs assessing young players with significant future potential.

Chelsea and BlueCo have continued to monitor players at an early stage of their development, with Ahanor now among the young defenders attracting their attention. However, Atalanta’s decision to reject two summer bids underlines the value they currently place on the teenager.

There has been no indication that Ahanor has made a decision over his international future. His two Italy appearances have not closed the possibility of a switch to Nigeria because they were earned in non-competitive fixtures.

For now, Ahanor remains part of Atalanta’s plans, while Chelsea continue to follow his progress. The defender’s Italian connections, Nigerian heritage, eligibility status and development through Genoa and Atalanta have combined to make him a notable young player in both the transfer market and the international picture.
