Christantus Uche set to miss 2026/27 season after serious knee injury
Christantus Uche is expected to miss the whole of the 2026/27 season after scans showed serious damage to his right knee, according to Spanish publication Diario AS.
The Getafe and Nigeria midfielder suffered the injury during his club’s pre-season friendly against French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco. Further examinations reportedly found several tears affecting both the ligaments and menisci in his right knee.
Uche is now expected to undergo surgery, a procedure that would rule him out for the entire 2026/27 campaign. The reported extent of the injury represents a significant setback for the 23-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Premier League club Crystal Palace.
Getafe initially described the problem as a contusion to the kneecap after the match. The Spanish club issued an update on its official website, saying more tests would be required before the full extent of the injury could be determined.
“Following initial tests and clinical examination by the club’s medical staff, Christantus Uche was found to have a contusion on the kneecap of his right leg, caused by the blow suffered during the match against AS Monaco,” the club said.
“The footballer is awaiting further tests to assess the full extent of the injury. Clinical evolution will determine its availability.”
Those subsequent scans are understood to have revealed more extensive damage than first indicated. Diario AS reported that multiple structures in Uche’s knee had been affected, with injuries involving both the ligaments and menisci.
The Nigeria international’s absence would mean he is likely to miss the whole of the forthcoming campaign, subject to the outcome of surgery and his rehabilitation. Getafe have not yet provided a further official update on the scan results or confirmed a timetable for his recovery.
Uche joined Crystal Palace on loan last season, having remained under contract with Getafe. His injury occurred during the club’s preparations for the new season, in a fixture against AS Monaco.
The initial diagnosis from Getafe referred only to the impact sustained during the match, but the later medical findings reported in Spain have raised concerns over a much longer lay-off. If the expected operation goes ahead, Uche would face an extended period of treatment and rehabilitation before he could return to competitive football.
The midfielder is therefore expected to be unavailable throughout the 2026/27 season, with the final recovery timeline dependent on the surgery and his progress afterwards.
