Super Eagles star Nwaiwu reacts to Trabzonspor’s Konyaspor defeat
Nigeria defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has admitted his frustration after Trabzonspor suffered a 1-0 defeat to Konyaspor in Saturday’s Turkish Super Lig encounter.
Trabzonspor entered the fifth-round fixture hoping to build on their emphatic 5-0 victory over Gençlerbirliği in their previous league outing, but Konyaspor ended their winning momentum with a narrow victory.
Nwaiwu started the game for Trabzonspor and was involved throughout the contest as the visitors struggled to turn their opportunities into goals.
Konyaspor made a perfect start when Rajmund Toth struck in the second minute to give the home side an early lead.
Trabzonspor created opportunities to get back into the game but failed to find an equaliser, leaving Nwaiwu and his teammates to reflect on a disappointing result.
The Nigeria international praised the travelling Trabzonspor supporters for their backing before acknowledging that the decisive difference between the two sides was their ability to make the most of their opportunities.
“I always want to say this: I thank our fans who came all the way here. Football is like that; sometimes you can’t take advantage of opportunities, while your opponent takes advantage of the opportunities they get,” Nwaiwu said, as quoted by A Spor.
The defeat was particularly frustrating for Trabzonspor following their 5-0 demolition of Gençlerbirliği, which had raised hopes of building momentum early in the campaign.
Nwaiwu made no attempt to hide his emotions when asked about the setback, admitting that the loss had taken a heavy toll on the team.
“Actually, I’m very angry and very sad right now. It was a very demoralizing defeat for all of us,” he said.
The result leaves Trabzonspor with seven points from their opening five league matches, having recorded two wins, one draw and two defeats. Konyaspor, meanwhile, secured their first three points of the campaign.
The setback also comes at a time of transition for Trabzonspor, with Hüseyin Çimşir currently serving as interim coach following Fatih Tekke’s departure earlier in September.
Çimşir had overseen the club’s 5-0 victory over Gençlerbirliği before the disappointing result in Konya.
Trabzonspor will now have to respond quickly, with a difficult home fixture against Galatasaray next on their schedule as they seek to regain consistency and prevent further ground from being lost in the early stages of the Turkish Super Lig season.
