NSC unveils plan to upgrade Moshood Abiola National Stadium

The Federal Government is planning a major renovation of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, with proposed improvements covering the playing surface, lighting and a possible roof covering as part of efforts to restore the facility to international standards.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, disclosed the plans when he received a delegation from four Federal Government-owned media organisations in Abuja on Tuesday.
The delegation comprised representatives of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Voice of Nigeria (VON) and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).
Dikko said the proposed improvements were part of the government’s broader ambition to reposition the national stadium as a modern facility capable of hosting major sporting competitions, concerts and other commercial events.
He identified the playing surface, lighting and other essential infrastructure as areas requiring attention, while the commission is also considering roofing the stadium to improve its appearance and functionality.
The proposed roof covering is expected to enhance the venue’s suitability for different categories of events and strengthen its appeal to event organisers, athletes, sports administrators and private investors.
According to Dikko, the commission wants the stadium to operate as a multipurpose venue rather than remain active mainly when football matches are scheduled.
He said the plan includes developing complementary services such as hospitality, commercial and conference facilities to help the complex generate revenue beyond match days.
The NSC chairman also emphasised the importance of attracting private-sector investment to sports infrastructure development and management.
He said a sustainable commercial model could reduce the facility’s dependence on government funding for maintenance while creating employment and business opportunities.
The proposed renovation follows the Federal Government’s wider sports infrastructure renewal programme announced in May 2026. That programme includes a comprehensive overhaul of the Abuja stadium’s main pitch and tartan tracks, alongside improvements to dressing rooms, the media centre, VIP areas, corporate suites, public-address systems and security infrastructure.
The broader plans also include internationally compliant floodlights, electronic advertising boards, a protective pitch cover and the introduction of Video Assistant Referee technology.
The state of the Abuja stadium’s playing surface has limited its use for some national-team fixtures in recent years, forcing Nigeria to consider alternative venues for home matches.
The planned rehabilitation is therefore expected to be significant for the Super Eagles and other national teams, provided the work delivers a durable pitch that can meet the demands of elite competition.
Dikko said the commission was committed to developing and maintaining sports facilities as national assets that could support sporting excellence and generate wider economic benefits.
He also called for stronger collaboration with government-owned media organisations to publicise sports development initiatives, attract investment and improve public awareness of the commission’s programmes.
Although the commission has outlined the proposed improvements, the latest report did not provide a detailed construction timetable or completion date for the roof covering.
The project’s success will ultimately depend not only on the quality of the renovation but also on consistent maintenance and a sustainable plan for managing the facility after the work is completed.
