Franco Baresi: Italy and AC Milan legend dies aged 66 after illness

Italy and AC Milan great Franco Baresi, one of the most influential defenders in football history and a World Cup winner in 1982, has died at the age of 66.

Baresi passed away at the Humanitas hospital in Rozzano after battling illness for around a year, according to Spanish newspaper AS. His health problems began with the removal of a lung nodule, which gradually forced him away from public life.

AC Milan, the only club he represented during his 20-year professional career, were the first to confirm his death, issuing an emotional statement to announce the loss of their honorary vice-president.

“The entire history of AC Milan mourns the passing of Franco Baresi,” the club said. “His example and integrity will be forever engraved in the club’s DNA, just as his legendary number 6 shirt will remain.”

The statement continued: “The AC Milan family extends its deepest condolences to the Baresi family in this difficult moment, sentiments shared by all Rossoneri fans who feel this loss as their own.”

Global icon of defending

Regarded as one of the finest central defenders the game has seen, Baresi’s reputation stretched far beyond Italy. His leadership for both AC Milan and the Italy national team made him an enduring symbol of defensive excellence and sporting conduct worldwide.

Baresi spent his entire club career at AC Milan between 1977 and 1997, making 719 appearances for the Rossoneri. Over two decades, he became synonymous with the number 6 shirt, which the club decided to retire permanently when he brought his playing days to an end in 1997.

During Milan’s era of dominance, Baresi lifted the European Cup – now the Champions League – three times, in 1989, 1990 and 1994. He also won the Intercontinental Cup twice, confirming Milan’s status as a global powerhouse during that period.

On the domestic front he claimed six Serie A titles and four Italian Super Cups, helping to define one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.

Unique World Cup record

On the international stage, Baresi enjoyed a remarkable career with Italy, earning 81 caps and achieving a feat unmatched by any other player in World Cup history.

He was part of the squad that won the 1982 World Cup in Spain and went on to complete the full set of podium finishes at the tournament. Italy finished third on home soil at Italia 1990, before Baresi captained his country to the runners-up spot at USA 1994.

To this day, he remains the only player ever to have finished first, second and third at the World Cup, a unique distinction that underlines his longevity and influence at the highest level of international football.

Baresi’s honours list reflects the scale of his impact on both club and country. Alongside his six Serie A titles, four Italian Super Cups, three European Cups, two European Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups with Milan, the 1982 World Cup triumph with Italy stands as the crowning achievement of an extraordinary career.

For Milan supporters, his name is inseparable from the number 6 shirt and from a period in which the club set new standards for defensive organisation and collective success.

His final public appearance came in February this year, when he carried the Olympic torch into San Siro alongside Giuseppe Bergomi as part of the build-up to the Winter Olympic Games, a symbolic moment that reunited two great figures of Italian football.
