Fifa president Gianni Infantino has paid an effusive tribute to Argentina’s World Cup campaign, praising their “unforgettable” fightback and “spirit that inspired millions” – just days after a bad-tempered final defeat to Spain descended into red cards, clashes and controversy.

He continued: “ان العودة الى المباراة النهايية لكاس العالم بعد رفع اللقب في نسخة 2022 لهي خير دليل على التميز والمستويات العالية المستمرة للكرة الارجنتينية. شكرا لكم على مساهمتكم في جعل هذه البطولة خاصة جدا، وعلى المنافسة بهذه الشغف الكبير حتى اللحظات الاخيرة”.

His comments underline Fifa’s desire to highlight the sporting achievement of Lionel Messi’s side – who reached consecutive World Cup finals – even as debate rages over their conduct in the closing stages of the tournament.
