John Obi Mikel urges Chelsea to sign Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Club World Cup

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Former Nigeria captain and Chelsea legend John Mikel Obi has urged his former club to make a bold move for Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place from June 14 to July 13.

Ronaldo, who currently captains Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, is yet to sign a contract extension, with his current deal expiring at the end of the month.

The uncertainty surrounding his future has sparked speculation about a potential short-term move to a Club World Cup participant.

Mikel believes Chelsea should seize the opportunity and bring in the 40-year-old forward to bolster their squad for the high-profile tournament.

“Ronaldo is an amazing player. He’s an all-time goal scorer, so it would be great to see him participate in this tournament,” Mikel said during an appearance on talkSPORT Drive.

“Do we need him at Chelsea? Of course we do. We need a number nine, but I think everybody knows the number nine that I want us to get—and we’re not getting him.”

The 2012 UEFA Champions League winner has previously backed Chelsea to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, but the club appears hesitant to pursue the Napoli forward.

It remains unclear whether the Blues would consider a move for Ronaldo, who continues to delay a decision on his future in Saudi Arabia.

Chelsea will be one of the English representatives at the inaugural expanded Club World Cup and are expected to strengthen their squad ahead of the competition.
