Juan Garcia targets Champions League glory and shrugs off Real Madrid transfer talk

Barcelona goalkeeper Juan Garcia says he is fully focused on helping his club win the Champions League and is not concerned by Real Madrid’s transfer activity ahead of the new season.
Speaking during his own training camp, in comments reported by Marca, the Barca goalkeeper stressed that concentrating on Barcelona’s development is the only way to reach their objectives, rather than worrying about what their rivals are doing.
Garcia insisted it would be a mistake for Barcelona to become preoccupied with the squad being built at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“It would be a mistake to look at others. We have proved we are a great team. If we focus on ourselves, we can beat any opponent. They have very good players, but we have seen many times that having good players is not everything,” he said.
Champions League the main objective
Garcia outlined a clear target for the coming campaign, identifying the Champions League as his primary ambition with Barcelona for the 2026-27 season.
“I have spent a year with Barcelona, we won La Liga and the Super Cup, and now I have won the World Cup with Spain, and my goal for the 2026-2027 season is the Champions League, it is the biggest competition at club level,” he explained.
The Spain international said he does not want the pursuit of that trophy to become unhealthy, but believes the squad has enough quality to compete for it.
“Obsession is not a good thing, because if we do not succeed the negative impact can be big, but we must have the ambition and the desire to perform well, because we have the ability to achieve that,” he added.
Backing Ferran Torres to stay
Garcia also addressed the future of his team-mate Ferran Torres, making clear he hopes the forward remains at the club beyond the current transfer window.
“I would be very happy if he stays. He is a great player on and off the pitch. If it was up to me, he would definitely remain,” Garcia said.
Trust in Deco over possible Julian Alvarez move
The goalkeeper was asked about the possibility of Barcelona signing Julian Alvarez, but declined to offer an opinion on a move for the Argentina international.
He instead underlined his confidence in the work being carried out by sporting director Deco and praised the reinforcements already brought in during the summer.
Garcia did not go into detail about the new arrivals, but his remarks reflected a broader belief within the squad that the club has strengthened sensibly as they prepare to defend their domestic titles and push for European success.
Fighting for the No 1 spot
Garcia is due to report back for pre-season with Barcelona around 10 August, following his post‐World Cup break.
He said he is training with the aim of being ready to compete for a starting place in the opening La Liga fixture of the season, when Barcelona face Elche on 23 August.
The 23 August meeting with Elche will mark the beginning of a campaign in which Garcia wants Barcelona to build on last season’s La Liga and Supercopa de Espana triumphs – and move a step closer to the Champions League crown he has now publicly set as his main goal.
