Kompany explains why Bayern Munich star Musiala collapsed twice in friendlies

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany says a minor adjustment to Jamal Musiala’s treatment was responsible for the midfielder collapsing twice during the club’s recent friendly matches.

Musiala, 23, is receiving treatment for what he has described as a “neurological disorder”, a condition that can cause episodes which are “temporary, short, but easily treatable”.

Bayern Munich said signs of the condition had been present before the World Cup and that the club had been aware of it before the start of last season. However, it has not affected Musiala’s performances in competitive matches so far.

The Germany international’s health had caused concern after he collapsed during friendly fixtures against Leipzig and Heidenheim within a four-day period. Kompany has now provided an explanation for the incidents ahead of Bayern’s German Super Cup meeting with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

“I spoke to Jamal, and he said: no problem, you can say that,” Kompany said.

The Belgian coach explained that Musiala had recently made a small change to his treatment plan, which led to side effects.

“He made a minor adjustment to his treatment, which caused some side effects. It is completely normal to make changes to a treatment plan. It was the reason he collapsed twice in four days against Leipzig and Heidenheim,” Kompany added.

Bayern Munich’s decision to discuss the matter publicly followed Musiala’s own comments earlier in the week, when he spoke about the condition and the treatment he was undergoing.

Kompany sought to reassure supporters that the club had taken the situation seriously and had received further medical guidance since the initial incidents.

“The initial shock for us happened a long time ago, so we do not talk about it very much at the moment. We have received much more information since then and made decisions with the help of leading experts. Jamal has everyone’s support,” he said.

The manager’s comments came before Bayern’s meeting with Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup, where attention will remain on Musiala’s condition after his two collapses in pre-season matches.

Bayern Munich has stressed that the symptoms had been identified before the World Cup and that the condition had not prevented Musiala from producing on the pitch in official fixtures. The club has continued to support the player while working with specialists and considering adjustments to his treatment.

Musiala had previously described the episodes as brief and manageable, while Kompany’s explanation linked the two recent incidents specifically to the side effects caused by the alteration in his treatment.
