Laporte ‘agrees’ Barcelona move after World Cup heroics for Spain

Aymeric Laporte has reportedly given his approval to join Barcelona this summer, in a move that could significantly bolster the Catalan club’s defensive options following his starring role in Spain’s 2026 World Cup triumph.

The Athletic Bilbao centre-back, now 32, is understood to be keen on a return to La Liga’s elite, with Barcelona poised to capitalise on a relatively modest release clause written into his contract.

Spanish media reports on Tuesday suggested that Barca will not be required to enter negotiations with Athletic Bilbao, as Laporte can be signed directly for €15m (£12.6m) thanks to a buy-out clause.

The move, if completed, would bring to Camp Nou a defender whose performances in Spain’s successful World Cup campaign in North America have been widely praised as a cornerstone of La Roja’s second global title.

The Catalan broadcaster added that people close to the player have directly informed Barcelona president Joan Laporta of the defender’s decision.

They “revealed to Joan Laporta, President of Barcelona, the player’s approval to join the Blaugrana this summer,” the report said.

That endorsement from Laporte’s inner circle effectively removes one of the key uncertainties in the potential transfer, leaving Barcelona free to proceed with triggering the release clause if they choose to do so.

Should the transfer be completed, Laporte would arrive as part of a broader attempt to reshape and reinforce Barcelona’s defensive structure, bringing with him extensive top-level experience in both domestic leagues and international tournaments.
