Mbappe returns to EA Sports FC cover after World Cup record-breaking heroics

Kylian Mbappe has reclaimed his place on the cover of EA Sports’ flagship football game just days after becoming the most prolific goalscorer in World Cup history.
The Real Madrid and France forward will front the Ultimate Edition of EA Sports FC 27, marking his return to the series’ showcase cover for the first time in four years.
The game is scheduled for release in mid-September 2026 and will be the fourth time Mbappe has appeared on the cover of EA’s leading football title, formerly known as EA Sports FIFA.
Mbappe confirmed the news himself by sharing the official cover image on social media, accompanied by a brief message: “انا عدت” – Arabic for “I’m back”.
Matching Messi, chasing Rooney
With this latest appearance, Mbappe equals Lionel Messi’s tally of four cover star selections for EA’s football franchise.
Only two players have featured more often. England’s Wayne Rooney still tops the all-time list with six covers, followed by Brazil legend Ronaldinho with five.
Explaining the company’s decision, EA Sports representative Jeff Charm said: “انجازات كيليان مع ناديه ومنتخب بلاده رسخته كاحد ابرز اللاعبين في جيله” – “The achievements of Kylian with his club and national team have cemented him as one of the standout players of his generation.”
The choice underlines EA Sports’ strategy of aligning its leading product with the game’s most marketable and successful modern stars, as the FC series continues to build its identity after the end of its long-running partnership with FIFA.
World Cup milestone drives global profile
Mbappe’s cover return comes on the back of a remarkable 2026 World Cup campaign in which he broke multiple records and further enhanced his global profile.
The 27-year-old led France to the semi-finals of the tournament, where they were eliminated by Spain. The Spanish side went on to lift the trophy, defeating Argentina in the final.
Despite France falling one step short of the showpiece, Mbappe took home the Golden Boot after scoring 10 goals at the tournament. In doing so, he became the first player in football history to win the World Cup top-scorer award twice.
The tournament also saw Mbappe move clear as the World Cup’s all-time leading marksman. His tally of 22 goals took him past Lionel Messi’s previous record of 21.
Achieving that landmark at just 27 years of age has fuelled speculation that Mbappe could set a benchmark that may stand for generations, with the possibility of adding further to his total if he continues his international career into future tournaments.
Commercial clout meets on‐field dominance
Mbappe’s combination of commercial appeal and on-pitch impact has made him one of the defining figures of modern football.
His move to Real Madrid, success with France, and growing list of individual records have turned him into a central figure not only in elite competition but also in the wider football entertainment ecosystem, where video games remain a key touchpoint for younger audiences.
By putting Mbappe back on the cover of EA Sports FC 27, EA is tying its most prominent football product to a player who is simultaneously rewriting the World Cup record books and cementing his status as one of the leading icons of his generation.
