NNL: Gateway United Returns to Abeokuta for Final Home Game of the Season

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Gateway United is set to make a long-anticipated return to their home ground, the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta, this Saturday, June 7, as they host Osun United on Matchday 21 of the 2024/25 Nigeria National League (NNL) season — marking their last home match of the campaign.
This will be the club’s first appearance at the venue in over a year, following their last game there on April 13, 2024, which concluded in a goalless draw against Ikorodu City.
Having played at two different stadiums this season — the Gateway International Stadium, Ilaro, during the first half, and Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode, in the latter half — the return to Abeokuta is viewed as a significant homecoming for both the club and its supporters.
Niyi Soleye, the Acting General Manager of Gateway United, expressed his relief and renewed optimism regarding this development.
“Returning to Kuto for our final home game is more than just a logistical shift — it’s a moment of reconnection,” he stated.
“This is where the essence of the club lies. The fans, the energy, the history — it all converges here. We’re proud to be back, and we aim to provide our supporters with a memorable experience. Nonetheless, we extend our gratitude to our loyal supporters in Ilaro and Ijebu Ode for their tremendous backing. We truly appreciate it.”
He further mentioned that the team has become more resilient through challenges and will rely on the home crowd to help them succeed.
“We encourage our supporters to come out in large numbers. Let’s turn this into a celebration — not just of football, but of resilience and community spirit.”
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, as Gateway United aims to conclude their home campaign on a positive note and maintain their survival aspirations.
Gateway United FC occupy the 10th position on 11 team log with 19 points after 18 games with two to the end of the campaign.
They return to traditional home ground is coming after the state government refurbished the stadium for the 2024 National Sports Festival.
The stadium also hosted the Super Falcons 2-0 win over Cameroon this week in an international friendly match.
