‘NPFL closer to EPL’ – NFF President Ibrahim Gusau makes bold claim

By Monsurah Olatunji
President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, made an ambitious comparison between the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and the English Premier League (EPL) following Enyimba’s qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) group stage.
After Enyimba’s hard-fought victory over Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso, Gusau insists the progress of Nigerian football, particularly in aligning the NPFL schedule with international standards.
He noted the reduced gap between the leagues, saying, “For those of you that started maybe 10 years ago, have you ever seen when we’re playing league, we’re only two weeks behind England?”
Gusau emphasized the need for continued improvement and expressed optimism about the future, stating that Nigerian clubs are now operating on a schedule that closely mirrors that of the Premier League.
This reflects a broader ambition to elevate the NPFL’s status on the global stage.
