Paris 2024: Asisat Oshoala harps on clinical finishing ahead of Japan clash

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Bay FC forward Asisat Oshoala said she is proud of her teammates after a gallant 1-0 loss to world champions Spain in the second Group C match of the women’s football tournament of Paris 2024 Olympics.

A last gasp goal from a direct free kick by former FIFA Best player of the year, Alexia Putellas lifted La Rojas to a hard fought win against the Super Falcons.

The loss dimmed the nine-time African champions chances of progressing from the group stage of the competition for the second time after the same feat at the 2024 Athens Olympics.

“All I can say is that I’m proud of the team performance,” Oshoala told www.totorinews.com

“I think we played good. We played against the world champions and we had our chances, we had opportunities to score Spain.

“I think the same thing happened to us in the first game. We were not clinical and we just need to be clinical upfront and I think if we start scoring goals we can compete with any team in the world.”

Ahead of Wednesday’s final group game with 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup winners, Oshoala posited that the team need to go all out for a win to stand any chance of qualifying to the quarter final.

“We just have to go all out against Japan.” She continued. “We have to go all out and give our everything and make the best out of it because we still have the opportunity to qualify. Hope is not lost.

“We’ve played two games , two good games for us as a team and I think our last match, we can be better. It’s just we just need to be clinical.” She concluded.

Super Falcons’ last and solitary win at the Olympics was against the Asian side in Greece (2004).
