Paris Saint-Germain ready to release Renato Sanches for free as midfielder seeks fresh start

Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to end their relationship with Renato Sanches by allowing the Portugal midfielder to leave for free, despite the fact that his contract with the European champions runs until June 2027.

The decision is intended to bring an end to a prolonged period of injuries and loan moves for the 2016 Golden Boy winner, who has fallen out of the club’s long-term plans. PSG will allow him to depart without a transfer fee during the current transfer window once he reaches an agreement with a new club.

According to French website Foot Mercato, the Parisian club believe that waiving a fee will make it easier to secure a permanent exit and draw a line under a sequence of temporary spells that has increasingly turned Sanches from a highly rated prospect into a problem on the club’s wage bill.

Sanches returned to Paris this summer after completing a loan at Greek club Panathinaikos. He made 24 appearances last season, starting 12 matches, and contributed one goal and one assist. Although injuries interrupted his campaign at times, the midfielder largely managed to regain his physical fitness.

He has also taken part fully in Paris Saint-Germain’s current pre-season preparations and has suffered no fresh physical setback. That progress, however, has not persuaded the coaching staff or the club’s management to give him another opportunity. Sanches is now considered to be completely outside the future plans of the Parisian project.

The 28-year-old continues to pursue a move that would allow him to maintain his European ambitions. He has turned down attractive proposals from clubs in Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Major League Soccer because he wants to join a genuine sporting project where he can play regularly and revive the form that first brought him widespread attention.

Sanches established his reputation at Benfica before making high-profile moves to Bayern Munich and later Lille. His career has also included spells with Swansea City and Roma, before he joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2022.

Interest in his situation has already begun to grow. Italian club Torino, German side Union Berlin and English teams Ipswich Town and Hull City are among those reported to be considering a move for the midfielder. Two unnamed clubs from Ligue 1 are also assessing whether they could offer Sanches a route back into regular football and help revive a career that has taken him from Benfica to Bayern Munich, Swansea City, Lille and Roma before his arrival in Paris.

For Paris Saint-Germain, the priority is now to complete a permanent separation rather than continue a cycle of loans. For Sanches, the next move will represent an opportunity to rebuild his career after several seasons in which injuries and temporary transfers have prevented him from establishing himself consistently.
