PSG confirm surgery for Nigeria captain Rasheedat Ajibade after fibula fracture

Paris Saint-Germain Feminine have confirmed that Nigeria captain Rasheedat Ajibade will undergo surgery after fracturing her fibula during the Super Falcons’ Olympic qualifying campaign.

The midfielder suffered the injury in Nigeria’s second-leg meeting with Comoros in the second round of the African qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Nigeria won the match 5-0, securing a 7-0 aggregate victory and progressing to the next stage.

PSG Feminine announced the need for surgery in a medical update issued before their league match against Lyon. The injury has raised uncertainty over Ajibade’s availability for both her club and the Nigerian national team.

No definitive date has been given for the 26-year-old’s return. Her recovery is expected to depend on the outcome of the operation and her rehabilitation, meaning both Paris Saint-Germain Feminine and the Super Falcons will monitor her progress closely.

Ajibade’s absence could be a significant setback for Nigeria as they prepare to face Morocco in the next round of qualifying next year. The Super Falcons are attempting to secure a place at the Los Angeles Olympics, and the captain has been an important part of their campaign.

She has provided leadership, attacking quality and international experience for Nigeria, making her injury a fresh challenge for the team ahead of the Morocco tie.

The timing is also difficult for Paris Saint-Germain Feminine, who must now assess their options as they continue their domestic commitments. The club will be waiting for further information on Ajibade’s condition and rehabilitation before determining how long she will be unavailable.

The fractured fibula was sustained while Ajibade was representing Nigeria, but the surgery will be carried out as she returns to the next phase of her recovery. Neither club nor country has yet announced a projected comeback date.
