Rivers United earn crucial away draw with San Pedro in CAF Champions League qualifier

Rivers United secured a valuable 1-1 draw away to San Pedro in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie, with Douglas Iyowuna’s second-half equaliser giving the Nigerian club an away goal to take into the return fixture.

The match at the Laurent Pokou Stadium was goalless at half-time, before Issouf Dosso put the Ivorian hosts ahead in the 55th minute. Rivers United responded through substitute Douglas Iyowuna, who levelled in the 69th minute to leave the tie finely balanced.

The second leg is scheduled to take place in Uyo next weekend, with listings indicating Sunday, 13 September as the date. The match will be played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Rivers United will return home as favourites to complete the job, but San Pedro remain firmly in contention. A single away goal for the Ivorian side would increase the pressure on the Nigerian team in the second leg.

There were opportunities for both teams during a lively first half, although neither side was able to find the breakthrough. San Pedro began the second period with greater attacking intent and were rewarded when Dosso finished to give the hosts what appeared to be a narrow advantage to defend in Nigeria.

The introduction of Iyowuna altered the momentum of the contest. His equaliser ensured Rivers United left Cote d’Ivoire with both a draw and an away goal, putting them in a strong position before the return meeting.

Rivers United cannot be eliminated next week unless they lose. A draw or a victory in Uyo would be enough to take them through to the next stage.

The winners of the tie will face either Uganda’s Vipers SC or Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

Rivers United reached the group stage of last season’s competition and are managed by Finidi George. The coach has described this season’s team as a new-look squad aiming to make another deep run in Africa’s leading club competition.

For San Pedro, the draw keeps the qualification battle open and gives them the chance to overturn the balance on Nigerian soil. Rivers United, meanwhile, will believe they achieved the result they would have wanted before kick-off: an away point and a goal scored.

Their task now is to turn that recovery into qualification when the tie moves to Uyo next weekend.
