Spain World Cup party marred as Argentina assistant Ayala ‘punches’ Dani Olmo in neck clash

Spain’s World Cup 2026 title celebrations were overshadowed by an off-the-ball flashpoint involving Argentina assistant coach Roberto Fabian Ayala and Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo, according to reports in Spain.

The incident is said to have occurred on the pitch in the immediate aftermath of Spain’s triumph, as emotions ran high between players and staff from both sides.

Altercation follows earlier clash

Spanish daily Sport reported that Ayala, assistant to Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, became embroiled in a confrontation with Olmo during the post-match festivities.

The flashpoint reportedly stemmed from earlier clashes involving Argentina’s Leandro Paredes and Spain defender Eric Garcia. Tensions between the two squads had already been visible after the final whistle, with pushing and heated words exchanged near the centre of the pitch.

As Olmo moved towards the area where the dispute had broken out, he is said to have crossed paths with Ayala, the former Argentina defender renowned during his playing career for his combative and physically intense style.

‘Punch to the neck’ shocks Spain players

At first, witnesses believed Ayala was stepping in to defuse the situation and separate players, the report said. However, those expectations were allegedly upended when the assistant coach surprised onlookers by striking Olmo in the neck area.

Sport reported that the RB Leipzig midfielder was left stunned by the blow, as he stood close to Eric Garcia at the time of the incident. The unexpected nature of the alleged punch is said to have left Spanish players momentarily frozen in disbelief.

In response, Garcia is reported to have pushed Ayala away, reacting instinctively after seeing his team-mate hit. The defender’s shove came amid visible shock at what he had just witnessed, further inflaming an already volatile scene.

Question marks over Ayala’s image

The reported confrontation risks damaging the reputation of Ayala, who has long been regarded as a model professional since moving into coaching.

The former Valencia and AC Milan centre-back, part of Scaloni’s trusted inner circle on the Argentina bench, is usually praised for his calm demeanour and exemplary conduct, both in press conferences and on the touchline.

This latest episode, emerging from what should have been a showcase for the world champions and runners-up alike, presents what local media have described as a troubling and “negative image” for Scaloni’s assistant.

Fallout after World Cup final

While Spain celebrated a historic World Cup victory, the scenes involving Ayala and Olmo highlighted how poorly some members of the Argentina camp appeared to take the defeat.

No formal disciplinary measures had been announced at the time of writing, and neither federation had issued an official statement on the incident. However, footage and eyewitness accounts circulating in Spanish media have intensified scrutiny on Argentina’s backroom staff.

The clash added an unwelcome coda to the 2026 World Cup final, turning what should have been an evening solely remembered for Spain’s triumph into one marked also by controversy and questions over touchline behaviour at the highest level of the game.
