Umar Sadiq Hints at Super Eagles Retirement After Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Heartbreak

Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq has admitted he is contemplating retirement from international football, revealing that he will decide on his future with Nigeria after the start of the new season.

The 28-year-old made the disclosure while speaking to Radio France International Hausa, explaining that he needs more time to evaluate what is best for his career following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I am thinking of retiring from the Nigerian national team, but I will make the final decision when the new season begins,” Umar said.

Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 World Cup has prompted widespread reflection among players and supporters, but the forward avoided assigning blame for the unsuccessful qualification campaign.

“I can’t really mention the cause of our failure, but that is behind us now. We just need to focus on the next World Cup, which will be in four years,” he added.

The striker also addressed questions about his recent omission from the Super Eagles squad, insisting that fierce competition for places could be the reason for his absence rather than any personal issue.

“I was not called up. Maybe my profile is not the type they need, and there are other players doing well in the team because, as you know, Nigeria is blessed with abundant talent,” he explained.

Umar’s comments reflect an acceptance of the depth within Nigeria’s attacking options, with several established and emerging forwards competing for selection.

While retirement remains under consideration, the former Nigeria international stressed that no definitive decision has been reached. Instead, he intends to assess his priorities once the new club campaign gets underway.

“There is still time for me to make the final decision on that. That is why I said I will wait for the new season to start before I decide, so I can think about what will help me focus on my career and last in football like Cristiano Ronaldo.”

For now, Umar Sadiq’s future with the Super Eagles remains uncertain, with the striker expected to make a final call after evaluating his club ambitions and long-term career objectives ahead of the new season.
