Daniel Akpeyi: Vozinha Deserved Man of the Match Award for Spain Shutout

Former Nigeria goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has showered praise on Cabo Verde veteran Vozinha after his exceptional performance in his side’s historic goalless draw against Spain at the FIFA World Cup.

The experienced shot-stopper produced a string of outstanding saves to deny the Spanish attack and preserve a valuable point for Cabo Verde in their tournament opener. His commanding display included seven saves and a clean sheet, making him one of the standout performers of the match.

Providing analysis on SuperSport, Akpeyi described Vozinha as the deserved Man of the Match and credited the goalkeeper for inspiring his team’s resilient defensive effort.

“My credit goes to the goalkeeper, who has actually pulled out the Man of the Match performance this evening,” Akpeyi said.

The former Nigeria international also praised Cabo Verde’s tactical organisation, noting that the team remained disciplined throughout the contest despite sustained pressure from one of the tournament favourites.

“I am not much surprised because I know tactically the Cabo Verde side is disciplined. They don’t change their tactics, they make sure they curtail you and that is what they have been trying to do to the Spanish team.

“The Spanish team have looked for all ways, they have gone wide, inside, but Cabo Verde have been able to stand their ground.”

Vozinha’s performance was not only crucial in securing the result but also earned him a place in the record books. According to Opta statistics, the 40-year-old became the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his FIFA World Cup debut.

The experienced custodian will now look to build on that impressive display as Cabo Verde continue their campaign and pursue qualification for the knockout stages.
