Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq inspired Real Sociedad to claim a 2-1 victory over Sevilla in the grueling Spanish LaLiga clash on Sunday.
It was Sadiq’s first goal of the season and also the first since he ruptured his ligament last in September 2022.
Sociedad took the lead inside opening fifth minutes when Marko Dmitrović inadvertently turned a free kick from Ander Barrenetxea to his own net.
Sadiq doubled the lead for the hosts in the 22nd minutes with a goal of the season contender as he collected a pass from Hamari Traore around center circle, took a few evading moves before unleashing a rocket from range to end that goal drought in style.
Sociedad were in full control during the first half and started the second in much the same way.
Sevilla halved the deficit midway through the second half when Youssef En-Nesyri’s headed effort took a significant deflection to wrong-foot Álex Remiro and offer the visitors some encouragement.
However, it wasn’t meant to be for Sevilla as they had to finish the game with nine men after Sergio Ramos and Jesus Navas were sent off for second bookable offense and unsportsmanlike act respectively.
Meanwhile, three points lifts the victorious Sociedad within six points of fourth-placed Barcelona as Sevilla slipped down to 15th on the log, just four points away from relegation zone.
