Southampton confirm Paul Onuachu’s permanent move to Trabzonspor

By Wale Mustapha

Southampton FC have confirmed the permanent departure of Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu to Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor.

Onuachu initially joined the Saints from Belgian club Genk in January 2023, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract for a reported fee of €18 million.

However, the towering forward struggled to make an impact in the Premier League, failing to register a goal or assist in his debut half-season.

Following Southampton’s relegation at the end of the 2022/2023 campaign, Onuachu was loaned to Trabzonspor in September 2023.

He rediscovered his scoring touch in Turkey, netting 17 goals and providing four assists in 25 appearances during the 2023/24 season.

“Southampton Football Club can confirm that terms have been agreed with Trabzonspor for the transfer of striker Paul Onuachu,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

“The 31-year-old is set to leave St Mary’s after a two-and-a-half-year spell, in which he scored four goals in 40 appearances. We thank Paul for his efforts during his time as a Saints player and wish him well.”

Onuachu, who has earned 25 caps for the Nigerian national team, was part of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, though he did not feature in the tournament decider.

The 31-year-old will link up with fellow Nigerian international Anthony Nwakaeme at Trabzonspor. He also holds the record for Nigeria’s fastest-ever goal—scored just 10 seconds into his full debut in a 2019 friendly against Egypt.
