CAF Champions League: Remo Stars crash out after Second-Leg defeat to Sundowns

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Nigeria’s champions, Remo Stars, have exited the 2025/26 CAF Champions League following a 2-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of their second preliminary round clash on Sunday.
The South African giants completed the job with two first-half goals at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Pretoria, sealing a dominant 7-1 aggregate victory after their 5-1 win in Abeokuta last weekend.
Portuguese forward Nuno Santos opened the scoring in the 21st minute, finishing calmly after a precise through ball from Aubrey Modiba.
The hosts doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Peter Shalulile headed home from a well-delivered corner.
Remo Stars battled hard to grab a late consolation but could not find a breakthrough as the Masandawana comfortably booked their spot in the Champions League group stage.
Meanwhile, Rivers United will fly Nigeria’s flag in the group phase after edging Black Bulls of Mozambique 3-2 on aggregate on Saturday.
With their continental campaign now over, Remo Stars will turn their attention back to domestic duties in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), where they host Kano Pillars on October 29.
