CAF Hails Oshoala’s Match-Winning Display as Super Falcons Keep Quarterfinal Hopes Alive
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has lauded Asisat Oshoala for her outstanding performance in Nigeria’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia, describing her display as one full of energy and quality.
After starting on the bench in the Super Falcons’ surprise defeat to Malawi, Oshoala returned to the starting lineup and made an immediate impact against the Copper Queens. The experienced forward scored the decisive goal in the eighth minute, racing onto Rasheedat Ajibade’s long pass before calmly slotting the ball past the Zambian goalkeeper.
Nigeria’s task became even more difficult after defender Tosin Demehin was sent off for a foul on Barbra Banda, forcing the 10-time African champions to play with 10 players for much of the contest. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Super Falcons held firm to secure a crucial victory.
Beyond her early goal, Oshoala delivered a tireless performance, constantly troubling Zambia’s defence with her pace, movement and work rate before being substituted.
The win earned Nigeria three vital points and revived their campaign after the opening setback against Malawi.
Reacting to Oshoala’s performance, CAF shared a video of her goal celebration on X with the caption: “Still got it. Still showing it. Energy of the Day today.”
The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to Wednesday’s decisive final group match against Egypt, where a victory would secure a place in the quarter-finals.
