Arsenal open Premier League title defence with victory over Coventry City as Onyeka starts and Awoniyi features

Arsenal began their 2026/27 Premier League title defence with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Coventry City at Emirates Stadium on Friday, with Nigeria internationals Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi both featuring for the visitors.

Frank Onyeka started in midfield for Coventry City, while Taiwo Awoniyi came off the bench in the second half as the newly promoted side found the return to England’s top flight a difficult one.

Coventry City, managed by Frank Lampard, travelled to face the defending champions in their first Premier League match since returning to the division. However, Arsenal quickly established control and had built a two-goal lead before the interval.

Arsenal opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Kai Havertz found the bottom-right corner following a pass from Riccardo Calafiori. The goal gave the hosts an early advantage and set the tone for a dominant opening period.

Bukayo Saka doubled Arsenal’s lead in the 23rd minute. The England forward reacted quickest to a rebound inside the Coventry City penalty area to give the home side a two-goal cushion.

Onyeka attempted to help Coventry City compete in midfield as Arsenal dictated the tempo. The Nigeria international was involved in the visitors’ efforts to resist the pressure, but Coventry City were unable to prevent Arsenal from creating a commanding position before half-time.

Arsenal continued to control the match after the break and extended their lead four minutes into the second half. Martin Odegaard was played through by Ben White and completed the scoring in the 49th minute.

Lampard made an attacking change in the 70th minute, bringing on Awoniyi for Ellis Simms. Awoniyi had recently joined Coventry City from Nottingham Forest and was introduced in an effort to give the visitors greater threat in the final third.

The Nigeria international was unable to spark a comeback, though, as Arsenal remained in control for the rest of the contest. The hosts secured all three points without conceding, while Coventry City were left to reflect on a challenging first match back in the Premier League.

The result gives Arsenal an ideal start to their campaign as they begin the defence of their title. For Onyeka and Awoniyi, the defeat represents a demanding opening to life in the Premier League with Coventry City, although both Nigeria internationals were involved in the club’s return to the division.

Onyeka’s appearance from the start and Awoniyi’s second-half introduction ensured both members of the Super Eagles duo played a part at Emirates Stadium. However, Arsenal’s early attacking quality and control of possession proved decisive, with Havertz, Saka and Odegaard providing the goals that settled the opening fixture.
