Moses Usor gives Eric Chelle selection dilemma after Nigeria match-winning cameo

Nigeria’s Super Eagles face Guinea-Bissau’s Djurtus on Tuesday, September 29, with LASK forward Moses Usor having given manager Eric Chelle a decision to make after his decisive appearance against Madagascar.

Usor came off the bench and scored just four minutes later, completing Nigeria’s comeback in a 2-1 victory. The 24-year-old collected the ball in Nigeria’s half, ran at the Madagascar defence, beat two players and calmly finished to put his side ahead.

More than the goal, his performance provided the direct attacking threat Nigeria had lacked. Usor carried the ball over distance, took on defenders and created danger by himself before producing a composed finish. His contribution has strengthened the argument that he should be included from the start against Guinea-Bissau.

Usor makes a strong case

Usor’s clearest advantage is the immediate impact he made after entering the game. Samuel Chukwueze had started on the right against Madagascar but was substituted after 61 minutes.

Chukwueze worked to influence the match and attempted to create openings, but was unable to make the desired impact on the night. Usor, by contrast, altered the threat on Nigeria’s left after coming on and looked dangerous whenever he received possession. Madagascar’s players appeared increasingly alert to the threat he posed.

That directness could be valuable against Guinea-Bissau, who are expected to spend periods defending with numbers. Usor is an accomplished dribbler, comfortable driving forward with the ball and attacking open spaces. Those qualities could help Nigeria break through a compact defence.

Chelle must also consider Usor’s physical contribution. The LASK attacker can run the length of the pitch for the full 90 minutes and is capable of competing physically with opponents. With Guinea-Bissau expected to make the contest demanding, his energy and strength could make him a suitable option for the fixture.

If the Nigeria manager wants his team to play with greater urgency and directness from the opening whistle, Usor has done enough to be considered for a starting place.

Chukwueze remains an experienced option

However, Usor’s goal and lively cameo should not automatically displace Chukwueze. The winger has been part of the Super Eagles since 2018 and has won 60 caps, giving him extensive experience of international football and a strong understanding of the demands of the African game.

Chelle could also decide that Usor is more effective as a second-half substitute. His pace, dribbling and willingness to run directly at defenders may have a greater effect once Guinea-Bissau’s players begin to tire.

The match will provide a significant test for Nigeria, leaving Chelle to decide whether Usor’s immediate impact warrants a first start or whether Chukwueze’s experience should keep him in the XI.
