Tottenham seek first league win as Coventry City arrive in confident mood

Tottenham Hotspur will host Coventry City in the Premier League on Monday, October 19, 2026, with kick-off at 20:00 WAT, still searching for their first league victory of the season.

Coventry arrive at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having won their past two league matches, although those victories followed four successive defeats. The visitors will also welcome back Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who has completed a three-match suspension and is expected to lead the attack.

Frank Lampard must decide whether to restore Awoniyi to the side that defeated Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United in his absence. The forward has made four league appearances since joining Coventry from Nottingham Forest in the summer without scoring.

Midfielder Frank Onyeka, another Super Eagles player in Lampard’s squad, is also expected to start.

Tottenham’s difficult start

Tottenham have drawn with Nottingham Forest, Everton and Manchester United, while losing to Brentford, Newcastle United and Aston Villa. Their six league matches have produced only three goals, scored by Jan Paul van Hecke, Dominic Solanke and Conor Gallagher.

The club’s two clean sheets came in the goalless draws with Everton and Nottingham Forest. At home, Tottenham have managed two goals in three league games, losing 2-0 to Newcastle United and 3-2 to Aston Villa either side of the 0-0 draw with Everton.

Their most recent match was a 1-1 draw at Manchester United on October 10. Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off in that game and begins a three-match suspension on Monday.

Coventry began their campaign with four defeats without scoring, conceding 10 goals against Arsenal, Hull City, Manchester City and Brighton and Hove Albion. They responded with a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest before beating Newcastle United 4-1 on October 12.

Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni scored against Newcastle, giving Coventry their first home win of the season. They sit 15th with six points, three ahead of Tottenham in 20th.

Coventry’s away form remains less convincing. They have scored once in three league trips, in the win at Nottingham Forest, after goalless losses at Arsenal and Manchester City. They have conceded 11 goals overall, compared with nine for Tottenham.

Previous meetings and key match-ups

Tottenham have won 44 of the clubs’ 92 meetings in all competitions, with Coventry winning 26 and 22 ending in draws. At home, Tottenham’s record is 26 wins, 10 draws and nine defeats from 45 matches.

Tottenham won the most recent meeting 2-1 in a Carabao Cup third-round tie at Coventry on September 18, 2024. They have won the past five meetings, scoring 13 goals and conceding one.

However, the last league meeting was a 3-0 Tottenham victory on March 17, 2001, while Coventry’s most recent league win over Tottenham came on October 14, 2000. The clubs’ only meeting at a neutral venue was the 1987 FA Cup final, won by Coventry.

Awoniyi is expected to face Tottenham’s centre-backs Jan Paul van Hecke and Micky van de Ven, who could replace Marcos Senesi. Tottenham’s defensive record means Coventry may need the striker primarily to hold the ball and bring Rudoni and Ephron Mason-Clark into play.

Lampard could instead select Cherif, who won a penalty and scored against Newcastle.

At the other end, Solanke has scored once in the league this season, heading in a stoppage-time equaliser at Manchester United from Sandro Tonali’s cross. Coventry are expected to use a back three of Mfuni, Bobby Thomas and Ethan Pinnock after playing with four defenders against Newcastle. They have kept one clean sheet in six league games.

Team news

Bentancur is suspended, while Lucas Bergvall, Savio, Pedro Porro, Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Mykhailo Mudryk are unavailable for Tottenham. Dejan Kulusevski remains a doubt as he completes his recovery from a knee injury, while Andrew Robertson is also uncertain. Archie Gray is expected to continue at right-back.

Tottenham’s predicted XI: Kinsky; Gray, van Hecke, van de Ven, Udogie; Fernandes, Tonali; Kudus, Gallagher, Marmoush; Solanke.

Coventry will be without Aurele Amenda, who has a calf problem, Luke Woolfenden (knee), Josh Eccles (ankle) and Haji Wright (thigh). Kaine Kesler-Hayden remains a doubt while recovering from a hamstring injury.

Lampard has confirmed Awoniyi is available, saying Coventry signed him “for a reason”. Onyeka came on late against Newcastle and is expected to replace Caleb Yirenkyi alongside Matt Grimes.

Coventry’s predicted XI: Rushworth; Mfuni, Thomas, Pinnock; van Ewijk, Grimes, Onyeka, Dasilva; Rudoni, Mason-Clark; Awoniyi.

Awoniyi was called into Nigeria’s squad by Eric Chelle for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September after Victor Osimhen was ruled out through injury. Nigeria beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo on September 25 before losing 3-0 in Guinea-Bissau four days later. They are second in Group L on three points, three behind Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria face Tanzania home and away in November. Awoniyi is competing with Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare and George Ilenikhena for a place, with Ilenikhena scoring both goals against Madagascar. A first Coventry league goal would provide Chelle with recent evidence in a closely contested position.

Onyeka had won 45 Nigeria caps by June and was included in Chelle’s September plans. He has had limited club minutes, appearing as a substitute against Newcastle and Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup, so a start at Tottenham would give the midfielder another chance to impress.
