Landon Emanalo makes Celtic debut after Chelsea loan move

Landon Emanalo, son of former Super Eagles defender Michael Emenalo, made his professional debut for Celtic in their 7-1 Scottish Premiership victory over Hearts at Celtic Park on Sunday.

The teenage defender joined the Scottish champions on loan from Premier League club Chelsea before the summer transfer window closed. However, a fitness problem prevented him from immediately training with his new team-mates and delayed his first opportunity to play for the club.

Emanalo returned to full fitness and took part in Celtic training last week, ahead of their UEFA Europa League meeting with Benfica. He was subsequently included in the squad for the visit of Hearts as Celtic looked to strengthen their position at the top end of the domestic campaign.

The youngster was introduced shortly after the hour mark, replacing former Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney. The appearance gave Emanalo his first chance to play senior football for Celtic and perform in front of the club’s home supporters.

He used his time on the pitch to offer an attacking threat from the left, making energetic runs down the flank while also contributing effectively in defence as Celtic completed a comprehensive win.

The debut represents a significant stage in Emanalo’s development after his move from Chelsea. His immediate priority will be to build up his match fitness and establish himself within Martin O’Neill’s squad during his loan spell.

Emanalo will also be aiming to use his first appearance as a platform to convince the Celtic manager that he is ready to compete regularly at senior level.
