Seven players who were sent off three times in a Premier League season

Only seven players have been sent off three times in a single Premier League season, according to StatMuse.
The unusual record spans from Vinnie Jones with Wimbledon in 1995-96 to Victor Wanyama with Southampton in 2015-16. Wes Brown also appeared to reach the mark for Sunderland in 2013-14, but one of his dismissals was later rescinded by The Football Association (FA).
Vinnie Jones – Wimbledon, 1995-96
Jones was dismissed against Liverpool at Selhurst Park on 9 September 1995 after a confrontation with Stan Collymore led to a mass brawl. Referee Keith Burge initially sent off Andy Thorn before correcting the decision and showing Jones a red card for an alleged head-butt, which Jones later denied. Wimbledon won 1-0.
On 6 November, Jones scored Wimbledon’s equaliser at Nottingham Forest but was later shown a second yellow card in a 4-1 defeat. On Boxing Day, Dermot Gallagher dismissed him for a foul on Ruud Gullit after producing a second yellow at Chelsea. Wimbledon won 2-1 and did not appeal.
David Batty – Newcastle United, 1997-98
Batty’s first dismissal came against Aston Villa at St James’ Park on 23 August 1997. John Beresford had put Newcastle ahead in the 13th minute, but Batty was sent off by Gary Willard in the 53rd. Newcastle held on for a 1-0 victory despite playing with 10 men for 37 minutes.
On Boxing Day, he was booked before being shown a second yellow by Mike Reed after the 64th minute at Derby County. Stefano Eranio had scored a fourth-minute penalty at Pride Park, and Newcastle lost 1-0.
Batty’s third red came at former club Blackburn Rovers on 10 May 1998. David Elleray showed him a straight red in the 65th minute, after which Batty shoved the referee while leaving the pitch. Chris Sutton scored the only goal two minutes from time.
Batty nevertheless played in Newcastle’s FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal six days later. He subsequently received a six-match suspension which extended into the following season.
Slaven Bilic – Everton, 1997-98
Bilic’s first red came at Newcastle on 24 September 1997. Already booked for a late challenge on Keith Gillespie, he received a second yellow from Graham Poll for tripping Faustino Asprilla.
At Stamford Bridge on 26 November, Bilic was sent off in stoppage time for bringing down Tore Andre Flo. Gianfranco Zola scored the resulting penalty in a 2-0 defeat.
Elleray dismissed Bilic again at The Dell on 7 March 1998 after he fouled Egil Ostenstad as the striker ran through on goal. Matt Le Tissier converted the penalty and Southampton won 2-1.
Craig Short – Blackburn Rovers, 2001-02
Short’s first dismissal was for a second booking in the 77th minute of a 2-2 draw with Manchester United on 22 August 2001. He later received a straight red during a 3-0 Boxing Day defeat by Sunderland.
His third sending-off came late in a 2-0 loss at Fulham on 9 February 2002, when he was dismissed for elbowing Steve Marlet. The resulting suspension ruled him out of Blackburn’s League Cup final victory over Tottenham Hotspur 15 days later.
Franck Queudrue – Middlesbrough, 2002-03
Queudrue finished top of the Premier League’s red-card standings in 2002-03, with all three dismissals coming after second yellow cards.
He was first sent off late in a 2-2 draw with Leeds United on 26 October 2002 for a challenge on Lee Bowyer. Nine days later, he received another second yellow near the end of a 2-0 defeat at Newcastle.
His final dismissal came in the 76th minute of the last-day match at Bolton Wanderers on 11 May 2003. Middlesbrough lost 2-1, a result that kept Bolton up and sent West Ham down.
Wes Brown – Sunderland, 2013-14
Brown was shown three red cards during 2013-14, although only two remained on his record.
Kevin Friend sent him off in the 36th minute at Stoke City on 23 November 2013 for a tackle on Charlie Adam. Replays suggested Brown had won the ball, and the FA rescinded the dismissal three days later.
Martin Atkinson dismissed him in stoppage time of Sunderland’s goalless draw with Norwich City on 21 December for a reckless tackle on Ricky van Wolfswinkel. On 8 February 2014, Brown lasted only four minutes against Hull City before bringing down Shane Long, who was through on goal. Hull won 2-0.
Victor Wanyama – Southampton, 2015-16
Wanyama’s first red came in the 78th minute of Southampton’s 2-0 home win over Bournemouth on 1 November 2015, after he collected two bookings.
On 2 January 2016, he was sent off for a second yellow at Norwich City following a reckless foul on Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe. Alex Tettey scored the only goal three minutes later.
Wanyama’s third dismissal was a straight red for a foul on Dimitri Payet during the 54th minute of Southampton’s match against West Ham on 6 February. Southampton won 1-0, but the FA gave Wanyama a five-match ban, including a two-match punishment for a third sending-off in one season.
No Premier League player has been sent off three times in any of the 10 completed seasons since.
