Nigeria’s Flamingos urged to stay focused for Mexico knockout tie

Nigeria’s Flamingos have been told to maintain the determination that carried them into the last 16 of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as they prepare to face Mexico on Thursday, October 29.
Acting Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme delivered the message during a visit to the team’s training session on Monday morning, after praising the players for their 3-1 victory over two-time winners Korea DPR.
That result secured Nigeria’s progress to the Round of 16 at the tournament in Morocco. Ikpeme urged the players to approach the knockout stage one match at a time and keep their attention on reaching the quarter-finals.
He also pledged to attend Thursday’s fixture to support the team as they continue their World Cup campaign.
Nigeria have scored six goals across their three matches at the tournament. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Oluebube Umejiaku have each scored twice, while Precious Oscar converted Nigeria’s second goal against Puerto Rico. Rodiat Kanyinsola Yusuf completed the scoring against Korea DPR with a free-kick.
Thursday’s meeting with Mexico brings together two teams who have previously won FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup bronze medals.
Nigeria claimed third place at the tournament in India four years ago after a dramatic penalty shootout against Germany. The Flamingos appeared to be in control after taking a 3-0 lead by the 63rd minute, but Germany fought back to level the match before the final whistle.
Nigeria eventually prevailed 3-2 on penalties at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, reaching the podium for the first time in the history of the competition.
Mexico also won bronze at last year’s tournament, which was staged by Morocco. They defeated Brazil 3-1 on penalties after the third-place match ended in a 1-1 draw.
