Alhassan Yusuf returns from injury as Nigeria prepare for Tanzania qualifiers

Alhassan Yusuf has returned to competitive football after an injury lay-off, playing 14 minutes in Inter Miami’s 2-1 victory over New England Revolution.
The Nigeria midfielder had been out since September, when the injury ruled him out of action and ended his involvement in competitive matches. His comeback is a timely boost for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who is preparing his side for a November 2026 AFCON qualifying double-header against Tanzania.
Yusuf’s return gives Chelle another midfield option as he assesses the fitness and current form of his players before the two important international fixtures.
The midfielder impressed during the Unity Cup, where his energy, work rate and commitment underlined his value to Nigeria. He can also contribute defensively while helping the team move from defence into attack, offering the Super Eagles greater depth in midfield.
His 14-minute appearance is only an early stage in his recovery towards full match fitness, but it represents a significant step after spending weeks on the sidelines. The priority now will be to increase his playing time at club level and rebuild the match rhythm that previously made him an important option for the national team.
Nigerian supporters will be hoping Yusuf can continue his progress and earn a place in the Super Eagles squad for the matches against Tanzania.
If he returns to full fitness, his quality, energy and work rate could provide Chelle with a further midfield option as Nigeria prepare for their upcoming qualifiers.
