Barcelona set Ferran Torres asking price amid Paris Saint-Germain interest

Barcelona will not enter a bidding war to keep Ferran Torres, despite growing interest in the Spain forward from several clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain.

The Catalan club plans to offer Torres a new contract based on its existing wage structure, with the proposed terms due to take effect in September. According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Barcelona have no intention of improving that offer if the 25-year-old receives more lucrative proposals elsewhere.

Barcelona would prefer to retain Torres but are prepared to negotiate his departure if he decides he wants to leave. The club’s position is that any transfer must be completed for “a fair value”, rather than at an inflated price simply to match competing offers.

Torres is regarded as a good fit for Barcelona’s sporting project because of his attacking ability and his standing within the dressing room. He made a positive contribution last season, scoring and assisting a significant number of goals.

However, Barcelona do not consider any player indispensable. The club has therefore placed the decision in Torres’ hands and is waiting for him to decide whether he wants to continue his career at Camp Nou or seek a move elsewhere.

Barcelona took a significant gamble when they signed Torres for €55m during a difficult financial period for the club. His market value subsequently increased after his performances at the most recent World Cup and after he won the title with Spain.

Despite the reports linking Torres with Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona have not received any official approach from the French club. Their information about Paris Saint-Germain’s interest has so far come through media reports rather than direct communication.

The club expects Torres to make his position clear next week, either by confirming that he wants to stay or by requesting a transfer, with the summer window now entering its decisive phase.

If Torres chooses to leave, Barcelona will seek to secure the highest possible fee. There is a belief within the club that forwards command a strong market value, and the minimum requirement for any agreement would be the recovery of the €55m paid to Manchester City for Torres.

His departure would leave Barcelona without a specialist centre-forward, apart from young Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim. That would increase pressure on head coach Hansi Flick to demand the signing of a new number nine, although the club recognises that finding an available player in that position is particularly difficult in the current transfer market.

Barcelona’s approach means Torres must now weigh up the security of remaining at a club that continues to value his contribution against the possibility of a bigger financial offer from Paris Saint-Germain or another interested side.
