Basel confirm back injury behind Philip Otele absence amid transfer interest

Philip Otele will miss Basel’s Swiss Super League fixture away to FC Zurich on Saturday after the club confirmed the Nigeria international is unavailable with a back problem.

The winger’s omission had attracted attention because of the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future during the current transfer window. However, Basel have made clear on their official website that Otele’s absence is injury-related and not the result of a transfer decision.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks, with Serie A side Lecce among the teams showing interest in signing him.

Lecce were regarded as one of the strongest contenders for Otele, but talks over a possible move stalled because of a disagreement about the proposed deal. The Italian club favoured taking the player on loan, while Basel were understood to want a permanent transfer.

Otele has also emerged as a possible target for several clubs in England’s Championship. Birmingham City and Derby County have both been linked with the Nigerian, and Derby have held discussions over a potential move for the winger.

There has been interest from elsewhere in Europe as well. Frosinone, Marseille and Union Berlin have all been mentioned in connection with Otele during the transfer window.

Saudi Pro League clubs have also been linked with the player, including Al-Fateh.

Despite the speculation, Otele’s absence from Basel’s squad for the trip to FC Zurich is not understood to signal that a transfer is close or that the club has decided to leave him out for market-related reasons.

Instead, the Swiss club has identified a back problem as the reason he will not be involved. Otele will therefore watch Saturday’s meeting with FC Zurich from the sidelines as discussions over his next move continue away from the pitch.

The injury leaves Basel without one of the players attracting the most attention around the club, although there has been no indication of how long Otele is expected to remain unavailable.

His situation has developed against the backdrop of interest from clubs in Italy, England, France, Germany and Saudi Arabia. Lecce’s preference for a loan deal and Basel’s reported desire for a permanent transfer have so far prevented that move from progressing, while Derby County remain among the sides to have explored the possibility of signing him.

For now, Basel’s official explanation is that Otele is sidelined by injury. Any decision over his future will have to wait until he has recovered from the back problem and the transfer discussions surrounding him become clearer.
