Bayern Munich keep Florian Wirtz option open despite Ismael Saibari depth

Bayern Munich have not ruled out a future move for Florian Wirtz, although former club president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says the Bundesliga side have no immediate need to sign the Liverpool playmaker.
Bayern made a serious attempt to recruit Wirtz more than a year ago, but the Germany international turned down a move in the summer of 2025. He subsequently left Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool in a deal worth 125m euros.
Rummenigge, now a member of Bayern Munich’s supervisory board, discussed the possibility of a renewed approach during an interview with Munchner Abendzeitung, reported by Goal.
“Could something else be possible at some point? I don’t know,” said the 71-year-old. “The question is whether Wirtz is happy at Liverpool, and I cannot judge that.
“Oli [Uli Hoeness] and I were in contact with his father and mother for some time. They then made a different decision, and we respected it.”
However, Rummenigge insisted that Bayern’s current squad does not require another player in Wirtz’s position. He pointed to Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry, while also highlighting Ismael Saibari as an alternative.
“We must not forget that Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry play in this position, and there are other options such as Ismael Saibari,” he said.
“There is no need to sign a fourth player as well, especially for the amount of money Wirtz would probably cost.”
Wirtz’s future has come under scrutiny after criticism of his performances in England fuelled speculation that he could eventually return to Germany. He was a regular for Liverpool this season under new manager Andoni Iraola, but had not scored and had provided only one assist.
The midfielder has nevertheless recorded strong numbers for his pressing, runs beyond the defence and passing between the lines. His first season at Liverpool was regarded as disappointing, and he also failed to produce the expected level at the World Cup.
Rummenigge said he had been surprised by how Wirtz’s career had developed since leaving Bayer Leverkusen. He recalled that the player’s decision to join Liverpool had been influenced by assurances over his role.
“Every move a player makes should be considered carefully beforehand,” Rummenigge said. “Quite honestly, I was surprised by Wirtz’s development.
“Our impression was that he went to Liverpool because the manager at the time, Arne Slot, promised to give him the number 10 position. That was the same role he had at Leverkusen, and it was an important factor in his decision to join Liverpool.
“There were no dramatic differences when it came to the financial side.”
Under Slot, Wirtz often played on the left wing or was named among the substitutes. He regained his rhythm around the middle of the season and improved his attacking numbers for a period, before an injury affected his progress. He finished the campaign with 17 goal contributions in 49 appearances, including seven goals and 10 assists.
