Casemiro’s Inter Miami move under MLS investigation over ‘discovery rights’ dispute

Investigators at Major League Soccer (MLS) have launched a formal review into Casemiro’s transfer to Inter Miami, casting an immediate shadow over the Brazilian midfielder’s high-profile move to join Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in the United States.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star was unveiled by Inter Miami on Wednesday after signing as a free agent at the end of his contract at Old Trafford.

But within hours of the announcement, MLS confirmed it was examining whether Inter Miami breached the league’s rules on negotiations by signing the 32-year-old without properly resolving so‐called “discovery rights” held by another club.

League opens inquiry into Casemiro deal

In a statement reported by British newspaper The Sun, MLS said it had begun gathering information about the transfer amid allegations that Inter Miami may have violated competition rules.

The league said: “تقوم الرابطة بجمع جميع المعلومات ذات الصلة وستمتنع عن الادلاء بمزيد من التعليقات حتى اكتمال المراجعة”.

The investigation centres on the MLS “discovery rights” system – a mechanism that allows clubs to register priority interest in foreign players who are not currently contracted in the league. Once a club has filed a discovery claim on a player, no other MLS side is permitted to enter into direct talks with that player unless an agreement over those rights is reached.

According to reports in the United States, LA Galaxy had previously lodged a discovery claim on Casemiro, meaning they held the priority to negotiate with the Brazil international inside MLS.

LA Galaxy’s claim and potential payment

Because LA Galaxy owned Casemiro’s discovery rights, Inter Miami were not allowed to negotiate directly with him under MLS rules until they had resolved that claim. In practice, that usually means the interested club must pay a fee to the rights holder in exchange for priority.

The report suggests that Inter Miami could be forced to pay in the region of £750,000 to LA Galaxy as part of such a settlement, although the final figure will only be confirmed once the investigation is complete.

The MLS statement continued: “بينما توصل نادي انتر ميامي ونادي لوس انجلوس جالاكسي الى تسوية بشان اولوية اكتشاف المواهب للتعاقد مع كاسيميرو، سيتم الكشف عن الشروط عند انتهاء التحقيق في التلاعب”.

It added that full details of the settlement and any findings relating to possible “tampering” would be made public only after the review has been finalised.

What are MLS ‘discovery rights’?

The discovery system is a longstanding and often controversial feature of MLS roster rules. It allows clubs to file claims on up to a set number of players outside the league, effectively reserving the first right to sign them.

If another MLS team wants to bring in a player whose discovery rights are already held by a rival, that team must usually negotiate a financial agreement to acquire those rights before any contract talks with the player can formally proceed.

In Casemiro’s case, LA Galaxy’s existing claim means MLS will now determine whether Inter Miami followed the required process – and whether the fee paid, or to be paid, complies with league regulations.

Star-studded Miami face fresh scrutiny

Casemiro’s arrival in Florida adds another marquee name to Inter Miami’s squad, which already includes eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi and Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez.

The club, co-owned by former England captain David Beckham, has repeatedly been at the centre of scrutiny over MLS roster rules following its rapid transformation into one of the league’s most high-profile teams.

The size of the eventual payment from Inter Miami to LA Galaxy for Casemiro’s discovery rights – and any additional sanctions if wrongdoing is established – will be decided after MLS completes its review.
