Edo Queens get 2024 CAF Awards nomination

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership champions Edo Queens have been nominated for the club of the year in the women’s category ahead of this year’s CAF Awards.

The Moses Aduku’s side earned a nomination after winning the West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) title and qualifying for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.

Their wonderful performance at the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League, including topping Group B and beating two-time champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies to reach the semi-final, attracted the award juries.

Despite their 2-1 loss to TP Mazembe (Democratic Republic of Congo) in the semi-final, the team remained one of the best on the continent.

They will battle it out with seven other clubs for the award.

Other nominees include AS FAR FC (Morocco), TP Mazembe, FC Masar (Egypt), Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies (South Africa), Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC, Aigles de la Medina (Senegal), and University of Western Cape (South Africa).

Edo Queens became the second Nigerian side to get nominated for the award after Bayelsa Queens in 2022.

No Nigerian team has won the CAF Women’s Champions League, likewise the CAF Women’s Club of the Year award.

Edo Queens and Bayelsa Queens had Nigeria’s best finish at the CAF Champions League after reaching the semi-finals of the competition.
