FC Porto enquire about loan move for Chelsea-bound defender Honest Ahanor
FC Porto have made an enquiry about signing Honest Ahanor on loan, with the 18-year-old defender nearing a move to Chelsea from Atalanta.
Ahanor is expected to leave Chelsea temporarily once the transfer is completed, as the Premier League club considers the best environment for the highly rated youngster to continue his development through regular first-team football.
The Italian-born Nigerian central defender is close to joining Chelsea, who are working to finalise an agreement with Atalanta for his transfer. Although the deal has not yet been completed, plans for Ahanor’s next step are already taking shape.
Strasbourg, who share the same ownership group as Chelsea, have previously been considered a possible destination. A number of unnamed Premier League clubs have also been linked with a potential loan move.
However, Strasbourg is not the only option under consideration, with Porto now emerging as another possible temporary home for Ahanor.
Transfer market expert Alfredo Pedulla reports that the Portuguese club have enquired about the possibility of taking the defender on loan. Porto are understood to be assessing their squad options ahead of the new campaign and are believed to view Ahanor as a player who could strengthen their defensive ranks.
Porto manager Francesco Farioli is said to be particularly interested in the youngster. His reported admiration could encourage the Portuguese giants to pursue an agreement with Chelsea once Ahanor’s permanent transfer from Atalanta is completed.
The approach from Porto means Chelsea could face a decision between several potential destinations for the defender. The club will need to determine which setting would provide the most suitable conditions for Ahanor’s continued progress and give him the first-team opportunities considered important at this stage of his career.
A move to Strasbourg could offer the advantage of remaining within Chelsea’s wider ownership structure, potentially allowing the Premier League club to maintain close oversight of Ahanor’s development. Porto, meanwhile, would provide a different route, with the defender joining one of Portugal’s leading clubs and competing for regular senior football.
Ahanor’s immediate future therefore remains unresolved despite his expected move to Chelsea. Strasbourg continues to be viewed as an option, while Porto’s enquiry adds another potential destination to the discussion.
Chelsea will ultimately make the final decision on where the defender spends the next stage of his development, once his transfer from Atalanta has been finalised. Their choice is expected to be guided by the opportunity for Ahanor to gain valuable first-team experience and continue his progress after moving to Stamford Bridge.
