NFF Congress Backs Tinubu’s Comprehensive Football Reform Agenda
Members of the Congress of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have thrown their full weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football.
The Congress, which met at Reno Hotel, Katampe, Abuja, commended the President for what it described as his unprecedented support and funding for the development of football and sports in Nigeria.
The members reaffirmed their commitment to supporting and aligning with the reforms that will emerge from the ongoing process, stressing that a fundamental reset is necessary to reposition Nigerian football for sustainable success.
According to the Congress, the reforms should address key areas including governance, transparency, accountability, stakeholder representation, domestic competitions and the overall development of the sport.
The Congress also acknowledged President Tinubu’s strong commitment to the growth of sports, particularly football, noting that his efforts were deeply appreciated by stakeholders.
Following the meeting, a delegation representing the various zones and major football constituencies—including players, coaches, referees, the media and other stakeholders—met with National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, at the NSC Headquarters on Friday, August 28, 2026.
During the meeting, Dikko briefed the delegation on the vision and objectives of President Tinubu’s football reform agenda. Discussions covered sports infrastructure development, funding strategies, harnessing the potential of the sports economy and the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE) framework.
The Congress subsequently pledged its unconditional support for the reform process and said it would await the outcome of ongoing engagements between the NSC, FIFA and CAF.
Once those engagements are concluded, the Congress said it would support the activation and implementation of the reforms in line with the roadmap and framework agreed upon by all relevant parties.
The Congress further described football as a major national asset that must be aligned with the broader reform agenda of the President.
It urged all stakeholders to embrace the proposed changes, warning that personal interests, fear of change and resistance to new approaches must not stand in the way of progress.
The NFF Congress maintained that, as a key stakeholder in Nigerian football, it remains committed to helping restore confidence and stability while contributing to the delivery of lasting success for the country’s football in line with President Tinubu’s directives.
