FIFA U-20 World Cup: Flying Eagles seek redemption against Saudi Arabia

By Dayo Awoniyi

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will aim to revive their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign when they take on Saudi Arabia in their second Group B fixture on Thursday in Chile.

The seven-time African champions began their tournament on a disappointing note, falling 1-0 to Norway in their opener.

Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Nigeria failed to convert, and two penalty appeals were waved away.

The result leaves Head Coach Aliyu Zubair’s side in urgent need of a win to stay in contention for a place in the Round of 16.

Speaking ahead of the must-win encounter, Zubair remained upbeat, stating that the focus has shifted to the task ahead.

“We’ve moved on from the defeat. The boys know what is at stake, and I’m confident they’ll rise to the occasion,” he said.

All key players are reportedly fit and available, and Zubair is expected to stick with his preferred 4-3-3 formation, but with a sharper focus on ball retention and clinical finishing in front of goal.

Victory over Saudi Arabia would put Nigeria in a strong position heading into their final group game against Colombia.

However, the Flying Eagles must also tread carefully, with Israel Ayuma, Daniel Daga, and Charles Agada all on yellow cards and at risk of suspension.

With their World Cup hopes hanging in the balance, Nigeria must secure all three points to keep their knockout stage ambitions alive.
