George Ilenikhena chooses Nigeria over France for senior international football

George Ilenikhena has opted to represent Nigeria at senior international level, in a decision that could end France’s hopes of securing the highly rated striker.
The 20-year-old Al-Ittihad forward was born in Lagos but moved to France as a child. He developed his football there and represented France at youth level before deciding to commit his international future to the Super Eagles.
Ilenikhena’s choice is a significant development in the competition between Nigeria and France for his services. His performances in European football had attracted attention, particularly during his time with Monaco, where he gained experience in the UEFA Champions League.
Nigeria’s interest in the striker was also influenced by its desire to add depth to an attack led by established forward Victor Osimhen. Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle had been monitoring Ilenikhena before the player agreed to represent Nigeria.
The forward received his first senior call-up in September 2026, beginning a new stage in his international career and providing Nigeria with another young attacking option.
Ilenikhena’s decision is also important for Nigerian football, which continues to attract players who were raised and developed abroad. For France, it underlines the difficulty of persuading eligible young footballers to commit to the national team before another country secures their allegiance.
His decision does not guarantee that he will become a regular starter for Nigeria. However, it gives the coaching staff another forward to develop as part of the Super Eagles squad.
Ilenikhena’s performances at club level will remain central to his chances of establishing himself with the national team. Nigeria’s immediate priority will be to help him carry his potential from club football into consistent performances on the international stage.
